Hyderabadi Khatti Dal is a thick flavourful curry prepared using Tuvar or Masoor Dal. The word Khatti means tangy or sour in English. The sourness can be attributed to the tamarind juice which is an essential part of the preparation. You can substitute the tamarind with lemon juice if needed though tamarind is the traditional ingredient of choice. The tadka of curry leaves, mustard seeds, cumin, dry red chilies and garlic gives the dal a depth of flavour which is truly unmatched. Khatti Dal is made very frequently in Hyderabadi homes where it is traditionally had with steamed rice or rotis. Chef’s tip: Add some finely sliced onions to the tadka to add more flavour.
