When it comes to Indian food, we all have our favourites from Punjabi to Mughlai, Andhra to Goan, but Chinese food can safely be called our national obsession. But can Indian Chinese Cuisine really be called Chinese when no one in China actually eats it? Well…according to Wikipedia it’s a yes and that’s good enough for me. But what exactly is Indian Chinese Food? Chinese Cuisine was first brought to India by Chinese migrants to Calcutta in the 18TH Century. With time the cuisine evolved catering more and more to the Indian palates. Some of the significant changes include the use of chillies to make the food more spicy and the incorporation of sauces in the gravies like Hoisin, Black Bean, Oyster etc. With all its rice and gravy-based dishes, Chinese food was the ideal combination of foreign and familiar for Indians. Another reason for the popularity of Chinese food can be attributed to the fact that Indian food is one of the few cuisines that has very few Umami flavours and the introduction of Chinese cuisine satisfied that.
Some of the popular Indian Chinese dishes which your Chinese friend might not know about are Chilly Chicken, American Chopsuey, Sweet Corn Soup, Gobi Manchurian, Manchow Soup and Fried Rice. Yes, Fried Rice! Trust Indians to fry rice with a bunch of vegetables and call it Chinese Food. But be that as it may Fried Rice has become so popular in India that it’s almost a staple dish in our kitchens, both home and commercial. Being a one dish meal it incorporates carbohydrates, proteins and veggies in a single serving. The best part is you can even adjust it to meet your dietary requirements just switch the white rice to brown rice or add more veggies etc, the options are endless. One of the very first foreign cuisines to be introduced in Indian Restaurants, it’s little wonder that Chinese food evokes nostalgia in all of us for those special occasions with loved ones in the days gone by.
