Most people in Bombay call this French Toast and practically everywhere else in India, this is called the "Bombay Toast." Call it whatever you may, it is one irresistable morning breakfast item or evening snack that we all love to enjoy.

Origin of French Toast:

According to Apicius, a collection of recipes from the early 5th century AD, the dish we now know as the French Toast today existed as early as the age of the Roman Empire. In their style of French toast called Pan Dulcis, Romans would soak bread in milk and egg and fry it in butter or oil.

A version called "pain perdu" or "lost bread" emerged in the court of the King Henry the V and it was the culinary rage. It was referred to as lost bread since the bread used would typically be the hard or stale bread version. Pain Perdu is what the French call "French toast" today.

The question naturally arises if the French did not invent this dish who did? Legend has it that it was an Albany, New York, Inn keeper called Joseph French who came up with this dish and named it "French toast" in 1724. He was grammatically inept and forgot to add the apostrophe.

French Toast Calories

Calories with the above recipe would be 270 calories for two French toasts without any of the extra toppings.

However, if your following the 5 day schedule and 2 day cheat plan and you happen to be indulging on a cheat day. You can always top this with sour cream, honey, jams, fruits, maple syrup, ice cream etc. The choices are enormous. But I just decided to keep it simple and plain.
