A classic South Indian dish, Chicken 65 is basically chicken marinated in yoghurt, ginger garlic paste and spices and then deep fried. The origin of the dish can be traced back to a restaurant (Buhari Hotel) in Chennai in the 1960s where it was introduced as the 65th item in their menu and later became popularly identified as Chicken 65. This method of preparation was later applied to other food groups and the Paneer 65, Gobi 65 and Prawn 65 etc evolved. Different parts of South India have their own versions of this dish. I’m sure you would have come across this dish at most Muslim weddings being served alongside the Biryani but it can be eaten as an appetiser as well. When being prepared at home you can reduce the calories by grilling the Chicken instead of deep frying it or you can even bake it in the oven. Crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside Chicken 65 just might be South India’s answer to the Northern Kebabs.
