Autumn is my favourite time of the year. It is a time with crisp, cool mornings followed by slushy afternoons in the incessant rain. Autumn, though very short in India, is a rather wonderful time where we welcome the cold winters. It is also the time of Halloween and spices and mulled drinks. The warm flavor of spices is my favourite, not only around autumn, but all year round.
Cinnamon, cloves and cardamom give a sweet, complex aroma that makes one feel fuzzy inside. And what better way to pair up these complex flavours, but with a tart orange. The tang balances out the sweet and spicy essence of the spices, making this tea a rollercoaster ride from the start to finish. It is a simple way to begin your mornings with a warm drink rich in antioxidants. The warm water reduces the bloating and the citrus kick starts your metabolism.
Let’s learn how to make this simple beverage.
This recipe makes one cup/ 200 ml of tea:
Autumn Orange Tea Ingredients:
1 tsp of orange rind
½ inch of cinnamon stick
1 clove
1 empty cardamom pod
2 teaspoons sugar
1 cup water
1/3 teaspoon tea leaves
2 tablespoons of orange juice
Autumn Orange Tea Recipe:
1. Boil the water and add the orange rind, cinnamon, clove and cardamom in it. Let it simmer on a low heat for about 5 minutes, for the flavours to infuse into the water.
2. Add tea and sugar and stir well.
3. Let the mixture come to a rolling boil.
4. Turn off the heat and add the orange juice. Strain the spices out and pour
into a cup.Enjoy hot!
That is how simple this drink is to prepare, and let me tell you, it has a stunning orange colour to it, that embodies the autumn season. It is also rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants.
Let us take a look at its nutritional values:
Carbohydrates: Total in grams for 200 ml- 12.37 g
Proteins: Total in grams for 200 ml- 0.216 g
Fats: Total in grams for 200 ml- 0.039g
Vitamin C: Total in grams for 200 ml- 12.81g
One 200 ml serving has a calorie intake of 51.28 calories.
Thus, this warm drink packed with Vitamin C is a good substitute for your morning tea. The little amount of tea present in this has catechins that are powerful antioxidants, but on the addition of orange juice, the staying power of these antioxidants is increased. Thus, this warm cup of tea may help keep your metabolism active throughout the day.
The aroma of the rind and spices is an added benefit to help awaken your senses. So, sit back, relax and enjoy a cup of this gorgeous tea.
